Melatonin is a naturally-occurring hormone produced by the pineal gland that plays a role in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. It is secreted by the pineal gland after your body senses the fall of darkness at the end of each day, and keeps your body synchronized with the rhythms of day and night.

It is also a powerful antioxidant that supports immune system function. As we age, melatonin levels decline, so supplementation is necessary to provide optimal levels of this important hormone. Scientists believe this reduction is the reason why older adults have more trouble sleeping than younger people.

NOW® Melatonin is a synthetic dietary supplement. Natural Melatonin is normally derived from animal pineal tissue, but concerns have arisen over the survival of unwanted microbes during the manufacturing process. NOW® would rather be cautious, so we only offer the safe, synthetic form of this nutrient.

Rest Easy with These Hints

1. Exercise. Just being busy isn't real exercise. We need to do something that physically tires us. Late afternoon is a good time.
2. Get up at the close to the same time every day. If you sleep four extra hours on Saturday morning you have added jet lag to your sleep deprivation.
3. If you feel tired during the day take a short nap between noon and 3 p.m. Try to limit it to no more than 30 minutes. Long naps leave people tired  and groggy.
4. Keep the room temperature moderate.
5. Turn off the TV. The TVs flickering light can go through your eyelids. If you need to have noise, turn on a fan or a radio. If you have to have light, use a night light.
6. Don't have that bedtime snack. Eating makes your body perk up again as it goes into the digestive mode.
7. Avoid nicotine and caffeine in the eveining. This includes tea, coffee, cocoa and any kind of chocolate.
8. If you still have problems sleeping the melantonin supplement is an excellent non prescription sleep aid. If you feel tired and worn out in the morning after taking melatonin the previous evening, only take 1/2 of a tablet the next night.

Other Benefits of Melatonin Supplement
Use of melatonin for control of insomnia or better sleep is the most common and well known benefit of the melatonin supplement. Other benefits include:
  • Melatonin is a hormone made by a part of the brain called the pineal gland. Melatonin can help our bodies know when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up.
  • Melatonin can be used to prevent jet lag.
  • Melatonin permeates cell membranes (particularly those in the brain) to provide protection against free radicals throughout all our cells. Melatonin increases the production of immune sytem cells throughout the body. This is very important for people over 40, who will suffer a progressive decline in immune function as part of the normal aging process.
  • Melatonin is a very powerful antioxidant.
