Are you free and in control? Or are headaches controlling your life? Are you longing for relief from migraine headache without side effects? Migraines can keep us from taking care of our family, going to work, pursuing further education, exercising, making plans, being a friend, enjoying life and having fun. Some people who experience frequent migraines wonder if life is worth living. It's that serious. If you suffer from migraine headaches, you know what I am talking about; you know what I am saying is true.
The common over the counter treatments and many headache prescriptions just don't fix the problem. Some of them provide temporary relief, but they often bring on "rebound headaches" that can be worse than the original.
It has been estimated that migraines affect more than 30 million Americans, almost 10% of the population! According to the Migraine Research Foundation American employers lose approximately $113 billion each year as a result of 113 million lost work days due to headaches or migraines. Now there is hope for migraine headache sufferers. Hope outside of the traditional advice "take two and go to bed." Natural headache relief is possible. .

Types of Headaches
| Chronic Tension Headaches can come from an overload of stress or from being fatigued, but more often they come from physical problems, phychological and emotional issues, or from depression. |
| Cluster Headaches come in groups of 1-4 a day in a set cluster period that may be a matter of days but can extend to months. |
| Hormonal Headaches have a similarity to migraines in that they affect only one side of the head and frequently are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to lights and noise. |
| Sinus Headaches can be experienced after a cold or condition that causes a sinus infection. |
| Migraine Headaches are often described as a severe recurring headache with an intense throbbing pain on one side of the head that often moves to the other side, although about 1/3 of the attacks can affect both sides. Attacks usually last between 4 and 72 hours and are often, though not always, accompanied by visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face. In 15-20% of cases, neurological symptoms occur in advance of the actual headache. These symptoms, which last generally 20-60 minutes are referred to as the aura phase of the headache. |
Methods of Natural Headache Relief
There are some common food items that have been known to trigger headaches. These items can be avoided and may help provide some real relief. From my experience the primary triggers are:
- Caffeine, Coffee, Soda.
- Alcohol. Red wine in particular, but some some people cannot tolerate any alcohol.
- Chinese Food or any products with MSG.
- Chocolate (unfortunately), sugar

| People have also gained natural headache relief with the use of aromatherapy eye and neck pillows. FeelingOutstanding offers exceptional eye and neck pillows at a very reasonable cost. |
| Acupressure promotes healing throughout the body by stimulating channels of energy known as meridians. Acupressure relies on the figertips to do the probing and has helped some gain relief from headaches. For headache relief here is a treatment method:
1. With one hand, press the shallow indention in the back of the head at the base of the skull.
2. At the same time, with the thumb and forefinger of the other hand, press firmly into the upper hollow of the eye socket, right where they straddle the bridge of the nose and meet the 't' of the eyebrow bridge. Press softly at first, then more firmly and hold.
|
| Another treatment used by massage therapists is to use your fingertips to push on the very top of your skull. This technique will help to relieve pressure and pain associated with a tension headache. Press the area for 30 seconds, three times in a row, while breathing deeply. |
|
A method that has provided relief to some is to divert blood flow from your head to your toes. Place an ice pack under the back of your neck and a hot water bottle on top of your feet. Cooling the blood flow through your neck while warming your feet can sometimes halt the pain causing dilation that is occuring in your head.
|
| Certain essential oils such as rosemary, lavender and chamomile may also provide natural headache relief. For quick comfort, gently rub one drop of oil on the place where it hurts the most. The essence of the herb is very concentrated, so even though it seems like a small amount, one drop should suffice. |
| Some people have experienced natural headache relief by wearing a magnetic necklace. You can find them at your health food store. |
| An herbal footbath can soothe your body and provide headache relief. Mix one teaspoon of powder mustard or ginger with very warm water in a plastic basin big enough for both feet. Place your feet into the water and drape a thick towel across the top to hold in the heat. Lean back in a comfortable chair, close your eyes, breathe deeply and relax for about 15 minutes. |
How Can I Tell if My Natural Headache Remedies are Actually Working?
| 1. Keep a Headache Diary. Preferably, begin before you start using the headache remedy. This will give you a comparison of past versus present and let you know if things are improving or not. Don't just rely on your memory, as our memory becomes clouded easily. A diary helps determine the causes of headaches. Some herbal headache relief products may be more effective than others. A written diary will help take the guesswork out of your diagnosis. |
| 2. Try one remedy at a time. Sometimes it may take 2-3 months before things really start happening. |
| 3. Keep up to date with the latest research. Talk to your nutritionist, your naturopath, your M.D., visit reputable health sites on the net. |
|
4. Keep a journal of what you eat and the headaches you have. This can be extremely beneficial in determining if there are certain foods that act as headache triggers and a great way to obtain relief from migraine headache. They may be able to be wiped out of your diet easily and you may feel great relief.
If it is determined that other addictive items such as chocolate or alcohol or coffee are triggers, their removal may not be so easy. A lot of soul searching and effort has to be done in some cases to see what is more important to you, to keep eating or drinking or the headaches they lead to. I know, as I have had to completely eliminate these three items and it was a huge struggle. Still, every time I look at a coffee pot I have a yearning to drink just a little. In my office at work I have in BIG, BOLD print right on my wall near my PC a piece of paper that says "WANT A HEADACHE?" This is to remind me what happens every time I drink coffee.
Keeping a journal can be a great piece of motivation for you. If you were having near daily headaches previoously and that has been reduced to two or one a week or even less, the journal will act as your proof. If you previously were having rebound headaches and they have diminished, once again your journal will be your reminder. A real boost when you are discouraged because everything is not perfect. A journal can show you that things are getting better, daily headaches and rebound headaches are being reduced. We all can use a reminder and a confidence boost at times.
